The Effect of Fat Capsules with Econika Extracts on Thyroid Function in Patients with Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome caused by a long-term, persistent deficiency of thyroid hormones in the body or a decrease in their biological effect at the tissue level. among women and 2-3% among men. Within 1 year, 5% of cases of latent hypothyroidism turn into manifest.
Pathogenetically, hypothyroidism is classified as follows: primary (thyroidogenic);
Clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism are very diverse. In hypothyroidism, almost all organs and systems are affected, and the modern structure of medical care forces patients to consult narrow-profile specialists. shoes, uneven speech. Periodically, especially after exertion, pain may appear. in the right hypochondrium, constipation, chest pain, shortness of breath when walking.
- Therapeutic: polyarthritis, polyserositis, myocarditis, coronary artery disease, NCD, hypertension, arterial hypotension, pyelonephritis, hepatitis, hypokinesia of the biliary tract and intestines.
- Anemias: iron deficiency hypochromic, normochromic, pernicious, folate deficiency.
- Surgical: gallstone disease.
- Gynecological: infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, menometrorrhagia, amenorrhea.
- Endocrinological: acromegaly, obesity, prolactinoma, precocious pseudopuberty, delayed sexual development.
- Neurological: myopathy.
- Dermatological: alopecia.
- Psychiatric: depression, myxedematous delirium, hypersomnia, agrypnia, NCD (1).
For the treatment of hypothyroidism with Econika extracts (in the form of powder and fat capsules) as a general tonic for chronic fatigue syndrome, the most pronounced effect was found in patients with initial clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism. Therefore, a study was conducted in which we tried to identify the effect of Econika extracts on thyroid function in patients with hypothyroidism.
Materials and methods of the study.
36 patients (outpatients and inpatients who were treated in the therapeutic departments of the 8th Medical Center of Kharkiv) with suspected hypothyroidism were examined.
In addition to general clinical examinations, all patients had their blood levels of thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and thyrotropin determined; ultrasound examination of the heart, abdominal organs, and thyroid gland was performed. In 25 patients, decreased thyroid function was detected (for the first time). The average age of the patients was 52±4 years (18 women, 7 men). The clinical characteristics of the patients are given in Table 1. In 17 cases, mild primary (thyroidogenic) hypothyroidism was detected against the background of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. In other cases, the etiology of hypothyroidism could not be established during the study. For a month, these patients received Econika powders in the form of fat capsules, after which a repeated examination of thyroid function was performed.
To create a database and analyze the results, we used Excel-2000 spreadsheets – a program for statistical processing Statistica 5. Standard methods of variational statistics were used: calculation of means, standard errors of mean. The significance of differences was determined using the Student’s t-test.
Discussion of the results.
The patients we examined were undergoing outpatient and inpatient treatment for various diseases, one of the causes of which was probably hypothyroidism. The patients received econica powders in the form of suppositories (1 suppository x 2 times a day) for 28-31 days, hormone replacement therapy was not prescribed during the study period. From Table 2 it follows that within a month after the first study of thyroid function, the content of thyroxine and thyrotropin in the blood significantly increased.
Table 2
Average thyroid hormone levels in 25 patients with clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism
Clinical parameters also improved in a number of cases. For example, 8 out of 12 patients with hypotension had an increase of 5-10 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure, which had not been observed over the past few years. Patients with anemia also received iron supplements, but in 9 out of 17 their hemoglobin level increased to a greater extent than it had previously been during treatment with iron supplements alone. In 6 obese patients, body weight decreased by more than 2 kg. All this suggests that the detected clinical changes and the increase in the content of thyroid hormones are not accidental.
Conclusion. Econika powders in the form of phytosuppositories can be used (at least as an additional therapy) for the treatment of patients with mild hypothyroidism.
